Dear Professor Lee:
Since Dr. Sheu is not interested in a degree,
the easiest thing is for him to apply to our master's
degree program, although this may not be the best thing to do.
Anyone with his qualifications is almost certain to be admitted,
and he will be free to take any courses. The problem is that
the tuition is substantial and an assistantship is problematical
though possible if his qualifications appeal to someone who is
running a project.
In view of his American degree, I don't suppose that Dr. Sheu
will be asked to take the English exam. The Master's deadline is
in June, I think.
There are three other possibilities. The PhD program, for
whose students we always find assistantships, is extremely competitive,
admitting 20 out of about 250 applicants. Its deadline is January 15,
and the GRE is required, so I don't think he could make the deadline
this year.
There is also a status called unmatriculated student, but the
Computer Science Department only allows such students to take one
course per quarter in computer science, because we don't want to
undercut the Honors Co-op program whereby local industries pay for
students and then some.
Yet another possibility is a Research Associate position,
which is appropriate for a PhD who as abilities relevant to one
of the research projects. This would require an approach to one
of the professors who directs an appropriate project, but it wouldn't
be appropriate for someone whose main objective is to take courses.
Dr. Sheu's background suggests that Professor George Dantzig would
be the appropriate person with whom to pursue it. At present, I have
three top candidates for one or two research associate positions in
my area of AI.
I will have the Department send Dr. Sheu application material
in your care.
I hope your work is going well, and I look forward to seeing
you again sometime - here or there.
